Tyreik Sammy's seventh-minute strike was enough to give Bray Wanderers a vital 1-0 victory away to Kerry FC on Friday night. The result ended the Kingdom's impressive 13-game unbeaten run at Mounthawk Park and moved Bray up to third in the First Division standings, a key boost for their playoff ambitions.
Sammy's early finish gave the visitors a platform they defended resolutely throughout. The win lifts Bray Wanderers to 47 points from 31 games, putting them in a strong position with the season entering its final phase.
Early pressure pays off
Bray started brightly and were rewarded inside the opening ten minutes. Sammy found space and fired past goalkeeper Matthew Connor to silence the home crowd. Kerry responded and thought they had a penalty in the thirteenth minute when Ryan Perez went down in the area, but the referee waved play on. The home side created several chances to level before the break. Cian Murphy headed a Sean O'Connell cross just wide in the twentieth minute, and Jonas Häkkinen blazed over from close range four minutes later.
Endri Mustali had a good opportunity for Bray in the thirty-first minute but shot over, while at the other end, Rian Hogan in the Bray goal was called into action to gather a low Sean McGrath cross. Richard Ferizaj tried his luck from distance for Bray, but Connor saved comfortably. Kyle Tucker was booked for the visitors in first-half stoppage time.
Bray hold firm
Kerry manager Colin Healy made changes to try and shift the momentum, bringing on Rob Keane for Perez in the sixty-fifth minute. His side continued to press, with Ajibola Oluwabiyi shooting over from a dangerous Cian Bargary cross early in the second half. Oluwabiyi missed another clear chance inside the area just after the hour mark. Dean O'Shea's shot found the side netting for Bray in the seventy-sixth minute as they looked to kill the game.
Healy introduced himself as a substitute in the eighty-second minute, alongside Cian Brosnan, but Bray's defence, marshalled by captain O'Shea, stood firm. Niall Brookwell was shown a yellow card for Kerry late on, and despite four minutes of added time, the Seagulls saw out the win. The victory avenges a heavy 4-0 defeat Bray suffered in the reverse fixture at the Carlisle Grounds at the end of July.
Colin Healy said his substitutions were an attempt to "change the momentum of the contest." The Bray backline, however, provided a stubborn barrier, with goalkeeper Rian Hogan securing a clean sheet. The team's top scorer this season is M. Murphy, who has eight goals in 24 appearances.
Bray Wanderers' recent form has been mixed, with this win following a draw against leaders Cork City and defeats to Athlone and Longford. They now turn their attention to a home game against ninth-placed Treaty United on Friday, 18 September. A full list of the squad available for that match is on our squad page.
